ACOUSTICAL PLASTER CEILINGS

part 1 - general

Section includes interior acoustical plaster finish for ceilings and walls.

1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the contract, including General and supplementary conditions and Division 1     Specification Sections, apply to this section.

1.02 WORK INCLUDED

A. This Section includes:

1. Field applied seamless acoustical finish as indicated on the drawings.
2. Acoustical substrate board where called for on the drawings.

B. Related Sections:

1. Section 05500, Metal Fabrications; structural steel framing system components to support work of this section.
2. Section 09260, Gypsum Board Assemblies; for Gypsum board substrate.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Show manufacturer’s installation recommendations.

B. Samples for Verification: Samples of finished products showing texture and color for approval.

C. Product Test Reports: ASTM-E84 test for flame spread, NRC test per ASTM C-423. Testing performed by laboratory     accredited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory
    Accreditation Program).

1.04 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Noise reduction coefficient for the 1" system shall be .70 -.75 as per ASTM C-423, Mounting Type E400.

B. Flame spread shall be Class A with a flame spread and smoke development of less than 25 in accordance with ASTM
    E84.

C. Light reflectance shall be 0.79 as per ASTM E1477.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced installer who has attended a training seminar by this manufacturer.     Provide copy of certificate of training.

B. Single source responsibility: Provide only proprietary, factory formulated materials as produced or recommended
    by Fellert Ecoustic. Substitutes within the system are not permitted.

1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver materials to project site in original, unopened packages and store them in a fully enclosed space where they
    will be protected against damage from moisture, and other harmful conditions.

    B. Inspect materials upon delivery and immediately report to architect damaged or defective materials.

 

1.07 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: Do not install the Fellert system until spaces are enclosed and weatherproof, wet-work
    in spaces is complete and dry, work above ceilings is complete and ambient temperature and humidity conditions
    are maintained at the levels indicated for project when occupied for its intended use.

1.08 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate layout and installation of the Fellert system with others, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment,     
    fire suppression system, and partition assemblies.

2.02 PRODUCTS

A. Products: Fellert Ecoustic

B. Design: [monolithic finish/custom design] as shown on the construction drawings.

C. Finish: [Natural or Troweled] to match architect’s approved sample.

2.03 MATERIALS

A. Fellert Ecoustic System: provide manufacturer’s complete system of proprietary materials specifically formulated for     compatibility, which may include:

1. Plastic C Channel - used to finish the system to adjacent surfaces.
2. Adhesive - cementitious adhesive used to attach the fiberglass board to drywall and other substrates.
3. Fiberglass - 1" or 1.5" 6-lb. density sound absorbing fiberglass board.
4. Aluminum washers - used to attach the fiberglass board to drywall grid.
5. Primer - used to prime drywall were the fiberglass board is not being utilized and over the self-adhesive
    mesh tape.
6. Alpha plasters - sound absorbing plaster that is made from cotton fiber and perlite. The basecoat and
    topcoat are applied by spray machine.  1/8” approximate completed dry thickness. Each coat of Alpha Plaster
    will take approximately 4-5 days to dry depending on local climatic conditions.

B. Accessories & tools: Use manufacturer’s recommended accessories and tools. This may include zinc screws, self-
    adhesive mesh tape, sandpapers, paddles and trowels.

C. Water: Clean, fresh, potable, and free of mineral or organic matter.

Part 3 Execution

3.01 MOCKUP

A. Construct a 10' x 10' mockup of the acoustical plaster ceiling for architectural approval of finish texture and color.
    Mockup shall be installed, if possible, as part of the finished ceiling and shall remain intact throughout the project.
    Actual installation shall not commence until approval has been received.

3.02 EXAMINATION

A. Verify the suitability of existing conditions before starting work. Do not begin work of this section until
    unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.03 PREPARATION

A. Comply with manufacturer’s written instructions for substrate preparation.

1. Fiberglass and Alpha Plaster to new drywall substrate: Do not prime or fill/tape any joints or holes.
2. Alpha Plaster only to new drywall or previously painted surface. Ensure that the new drywall has been
    prepared to a Level Four standard. Ensure that the previously painted surface is clean and secure to the
    substrate.

B. Protect adjacent surfaces.

3.04 INSTALLATION

General: Apply the Fellert system per manufacturer’s recommendations. Only apply Fellert to Regular Gypsum Board
              that is fire resistant and complies with ASTM C 1396. Do not use moisture resistant boards.

 

A. Fiberglass Board and Alpha Plaster to new Drywall Substrate.

1. Secure Fellert C Channel to studwork.
2. Mix and apply Fellert Adhesive to Fellert Fiberglass Board evenly and attach to drywall substrate. Allow 24
    hours to dry prior to any sanding.
3. Apply self-adhesive mesh tape and Fellert Primer to the intersection of Fellert C Channel and Fellert
    Fiberglass Board. Allow to dry 24 hours prior to Alpha Plaster application.
4. Sand Fellert Fiberglass Board joints with vacuum sander to smooth off joints.
5. Spray Fellert Alpha Plaster (basecoat) and leave to dry (approx. 4-5 days).
6. Lightly sand basecoat with a vacuum sander.
7. Spray Fellert Alpha Plaster top (topcoat) and texture or trowel to match approved finish and leave to dry
    (4-5  days).

B. Fiberglass Board and Alpha Plaster to new Drywall Grid.

      1. Secure Fellert C Channel to studwork.
      2. Secure Fellert Fiberglass Board to drywall grid substrate with Fellert aluminum washers and zinc coated self-
          tapping  screws.     
      3. Apply self-adhesive mesh tape and Fellert Primer to the intersection of Fellert C Channel and Fellert Fiberglass
          Board. Allow to dry 24 hours prior to Alpha Plaster application.
      4. Sand Fellert Fiberglass Board joints with vacuum sander to smooth off joints.
      5. Spray Fellert Alpha Plaster (basecoat) and leave to dry (approx. 4-5 days).
      6. Lightly sand basecoat with a vacuum sander.
      7. Spray Fellert Alpha Plaster Top (topcoat) and texture or trowel to match approved finish and leave to dry
          (approx. 4-5 days).

C. Alpha Plaster only to new Drywall or Previously Painted Surface in Clean Sound Condition.

1. Apply Fellert Primer by brush and roller to substrate and leave 24 hours to dry prior to Alpha Plaster
    application.
2. Spray Fellert Alpha Plaster (basecoat) and leave to dry (approx. 4-5 days).
3. Lightly sand basecoat with a vacuum sander.
4. Spray Fellert Alpha Plaster Top (topcoat) and texture or trowel to match approved finish and leave to dry
    (approx. 4-5 days).
